Support the Royal Armouries to deliver a museum workshop
Mightier than the Sword literacy project, by the Royal Armouries, Leeds.
The Royal Armouries, in partnership with Leeds Beckett University and professional storytellers want to develop, pilot and evaluate a drama focused museum workshop aimed at improving literacy skills, which gives pupils the skills and inspiration to write when they return back to the classroom.
Inspired by one of the Royal Armouries’ greatest treasures, the I.33 manuscript, the Mightier than the Sword literacy project aims to support the development of primary school pupils’ literacy and ‘oracy’ skills through unforgettable museum and classroom learning experiences, using innovative drama techniques, interactive storytelling and world-class artefacts to inspire writing, discussion and reflection.
We are ideally placed to lead on this because of our collection and our long-experience of drama and storytelling which is at the heart of our museum offer.
In recent years, a number of projects have demonstrated the positive impact on the learning and development of children of learning outside the classroom; of object-based, museum learning; and of drama and storytelling…
… Our project aims to combine all three approaches to deliver long term benefit to children and young people in Leeds.
The Royal Armouries are seeking corporate sponsorship to support the project, which in turn will directly support local school children, this including a travel bursary designed to remove financial barriers that are often presented to school and parents.
