Leeds-based Walker Sime delivers social impact at The Barnum
Chamber members Walker Sime, a Leeds-based construction consultancy firm, have played a pivotal role in the successful completion of The Barnum residential project in Nottingham, leaving a lasting impact on the city’s landscape and community. Serving as Quantity Surveyors, Project Managers, and Employers Agent, the company helped deliver a striking 348-apartment and studio development and prioritised the creation of meaningful social value.
The city centre residential project involved unique challenges to enhance its impact on the community. These included the careful relocation of a memorial garden, innovative architectural design solutions to prevent glare for train drivers at the nearby railway station, and the incorporation of striking curved walls as part of the development.
From the outset, Walker Sime made a deliberate commitment to maximize the positive impact of The Barnum project, focusing not only on construction excellence but also on creating opportunities for social and economic development.
One of the key strategies employed by Walker Sime was the engagement of local contractors, ensuring that the project directly benefited the local economy, and asked that every subcontractor involved in the project bring on board an apprentice, thereby investing in the next generation of skilled workers and fostering a culture of learning and development within the construction industry.
They also championed the reintegration of individuals who had previously been incarcerated allowing them to develop essential skills and contribute meaningfully to the project. By doing so, the company not only helped these individuals rebuild their lives but also demonstrated a commitment to creating inclusive and diverse work environments.
Schoolchildren were given the opportunity to visit the project site, providing them with valuable insights into the world of construction and inspiring their interest in potential future careers within the industry.
Walker Sime’s Director of Project Management, Andy McNaghten, expressed his pride in the project’s achievements, “It’s a positive legacy for us as Project Managers, Quantity Surveyors and Employers Agent. I think that’s why we all do what we do really – to make an impact on places that matter.
